Known as the “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel music in her father’s church. Her talent transcended her into a global star during a divided time in American history. Aretha was a pinnacle of civil rights and women’s rights struggles in the 1960’s and provided funds for civil rights groups. Two of her most famous songs “Respect” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” became anthems for social change.
In 1987, Franklin became the first woman ever to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2019, Aretha had the honor of posthumously being awarded a Pulitzer Prize for her “indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades.” This portrait is styled after one of her most iconic photographs from her “Aretha Franklin /Yeah!!!” album. The background is a colorful 1960’s/70’s style inspired by wallpaper in gold, green, and teal.
